Effective 22 August 2026 · The data ReliefMapper shows you, the data you create with it, and the limits of both.

1. Your data is yours

The areas you draw, the sectors they are divided into, the names
  you give your projects and every file you export belong to you. We
  claim no ownership, no licence to use them, and no right to look at them. We could not
  look at them if we wanted to: they never reach us.

Where your work is kept:

In your browser, while you are working — so closing a tab does not lose the day.
In your own cloud storage, if you connect it: the Apps/ReliefMapper folder of your OneDrive, or a ReliefMapper folder in your Google Drive. Those files are governed by your agreement with Microsoft or Google, not by us. If you close your ReliefMapper account, they stay exactly where they are.
In the files you export, on your device, from the moment you download them.

Backing up your work is therefore in your hands. Clearing your browser data clears work that was only in the browser.

2. Where the map comes from

The base map and the place search are provided by the OpenStreetMap project. Map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, published under the Open Database Licence (ODbL); the rendered tiles are served by the OpenStreetMap Foundation under its own tile usage policy. The attribution shown on the map is a licence condition — it must stay visible, and it must not be hidden, cropped out or replaced.

If you trace features from the map

Drawing an operational area over a basemap does not, by itself, make your area a derivative of OpenStreetMap. Copying the shape of features that exist in OpenStreetMap — a field boundary, a building footprint, a road — can produce a derived database, and the ODbL's share-alike condition may then apply to what you publish. If you intend to publish such data, check the licence. Areas you define yourself, from coordinates or from your own survey, are unaffected.

3. Accuracy — what to expect, and what not to

ReliefMapper computes geometry honestly and shows you the numbers it computed: sector areas sum to the area you drew. But two limits are real and permanent:

The base map is community data. It may be out of date, incomplete or wrong in any given place. It carries no guarantee of accuracy or fitness for any purpose, and neither the OpenStreetMap Foundation nor we give one.
A screen is not a survey. Areas and boundaries drawn on a map are accurate to what you drew, not to the ground. They are not cadastral, they do not establish property limits, and they are not a substitute for a survey where one is required.

Where a decision depends on the exact position of a boundary — a permission, a contract, a payment, a flight over people — verify it against an authoritative source before relying on it.

4. Exports

Exported files describe the geometry you created and, where the format allows, the names and figures you entered. They contain no personal data of ours or of anyone else, and no hidden identifiers. What you do with them — who you send them to, which system you load them into — is entirely yours to decide, and so is the responsibility for the operation that follows.

5. Deletion

Ask us and we delete your entry in the user registry (see the Privacy Policy). We cannot delete files in your own drive — they were never ours to touch; delete those the way you delete any other file in your storage.

6. No warranty on data

Map data, geocoding results, computed areas and exports are provided as is. The limits of liability in section 6 of the Terms & Conditions apply in full to everything on this page.
